seen | Pitch Perfect

Cover Images

Get ready to be pitch slapped! A fun and exciting new harmonic comedy, Pitch Perfect delivers an excellent mix of laughs, music, romance and vomit.

Like a mix of glee, mean girls, and bring it on, the film is centered on Beca (Anna Kendrick), a somewhat rebel loner with an affinity for musical mash ups, a modern day Girl Talk of sorts. Beca enters Barden University, a school centered on a Capella and the fight between the Bellas and the Treble Makers, boys vs. girls.

The film opens with Aubrey (Anna Camp) throwing up on stage into the audience and its from this we know the film is going to be hilarious. The comedy is a mix of dirty jokes and British sarcasm, reaching out to a varied audience in order to obtain optimum appreciation. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) is the true comedic star, delivering killer lines like “Your going to get pitch slapped so hard, you’re man boobs are going to cave in” and “My name is Fat Amy… So you bitches wont call me it behind my back” making sure the film has that ‘remember the script word for word’ quality that Mean Girls had.

A huge success, the film was well received by the whole audience, with drinks being spat in laughter and uncontrollable giggling throughout the cinema. We also couldn’t control our comedic uproar, so much so that we needed to go and see it again.

A must have movie, we can’t wait for the DVD release, sure to be watched over and over again. Needless to say the movie was acca-mazing and we give it a 8.5/10

heard | Iva Lamkum – Black Eagle Album Release Tour

iva tour

To celebrate the release of her debut album Black Eagle, Iva Lamkum has announced her first national tour. The tour kicked off in Wellington (her hometown) and will come to Auckland this Thursday 13th at 420 on K Road.

The album is described as “a songs-as-storybook collection of half a decade day-to-day experiences, Black Eagle consists of a series of deeply personal, yet universally relatable meditations on family, hard-work, internal conflict, the loved and the loveless”.

She is quite impressive live having seen her three times on various festival circuits around New Zealand. Her album draws elements of roots reggae, folk, rock, funk, indie so it is sure to be somewhat eclectic.

After Auckland, the tour then goes onto Raglan, Leigh, Dunedin and Christchurch with support acts tbc.

We are giving away a double pass to her Auckland gig this Thursday! To enter, simply Like our Mac+Mae fb page and comment on our page the answer to this question: Where in Auckland is Iva Lamkum playing? [HINT: Answer's in the first paragraph ;) ]

“Best of Me” and the Best of Ria Hall

251891_338721599538530_1771278245_n

This is New Zealand born and bred talent at its finest. Born in Tauranga, Wellington based musician Ria Hall amazed millions of viewers from around the world as she opened the 2011 Rugby World Cup with her cover of ‘World in Union’. New Zealand wasn’t about to see the last of her, however. Having recently released her own self-titled EP, Ria Hall offers a plethora of soulful, vibrant and fresh songs all of which tell of her own stories, her culture and heritage and what defines her. That is what makes her music unique and more-so appealing.

She recently released the music video to one of the songs off her EP, titled “Best of Me”. The natural beauty of her voice silences you as she begins to grace the ear drums of listeners with her opening lyric. This song is only a glimpse as to what is on her album. You only need to You Tube her name and listen to the live tracks to know what she is all about. Her live covers are as worthy to listen to as are her studio-recorded songs. Unlike most other artists, Ria is as strong vocally on stage live as she is in the studio.

I remember first watching her when a friend of mine posted a video of her from You Tube, singing Michael Jackson’s infamous ‘Whose Loving You’. Chills rocketed down my spine as she unleashed from within, her trills! In addition, she has also sung alongside Stan Walker covering Beyoncé’s song ‘Halo’.  From watching her on You Tube to actually interacting with her in real life, I was honoured to have her as vocals coach for a production I was in last year. Her passion for music was evident as she sought to bring out the very best in you and as a vocals coach, mentor, kapa haka tutor and singer; Ria is continually bringing the very best out in herself as she serves her culture, kaumatua and whanau.

Ria Hall never seizes to amaze with having just completed a performance stint promoting Matariki and its festivities. With the evening titled ‘Stars of Matariki’, Ria fronted the evening alongside Polynesian diva and songstress Annie Crummer, Betty-Anne Monga and Maisey Rika.

So in essence, as well as being a cultural standout, Ria Hall is an emerging New Zealand born and bred, soulful, vibrant and versatile singer who with a little bit more promotion in our airways and radio’s will become a household name within the music industry and throughout New Zealand households in no time. If her EP album and “Best of Me” track is anything to go by, rest assured that New Zealand cultural soul in the hands of Ria Hall, is definitely on the rise!

FOTC: It just got BIGGER

FOTCNZ_2012

Yes, you’re heard it right.  Flight of the Conchords (and Arj Barker) announce their THIRD & FINAL Vector Arena show on Saturday 30th June (that’s next week!).

Talk about ‘Inner City Pressure’!  It’s officially the biggest ever tour by a New Zealand artist and it’s about to get bigger!  Pressure for seats around the country when the tour first announced forced promoters to announce a Vector Arena show, which sold out… then another Vector Arena show… which sold out

The tour started to rave reviews.  The band are being stopped in the street everywhere they go and being asked to add more dates, so they have bowed to inner city pressure and added a third and final show at Vector Arena!

Squeezing in this new Vector Arena show between sold out shows on Friday and Sunday gives out-of-town fans the chance to make a weekend of it, with local hotels already coming to the party with great special rates for visitors to the city.  Traveling from the North or the Naki, this show offers a great chance for unlucky fans that missed out on the initial ticket frenzy.

The home-town Wellington’s TSB Bank Arena was put in to ease the Wellington pressure after three Michael Fowler shows sold out in a week and last week’s ticket release was snapped up.  So, in response to nationwide demand, this Vector Arena show will be the final announcement of the tour – there are simply no dates left to play!

Fans and critics alike are clapping and cheering and saying things like…

“Seeing them live proves their comedic and musical genius doesn’t come from successful television editing. Their unique and refreshing low-key, deadpan humour is pitch-perfect. They bounce off each other like Lennon and McCartney and their musical ability isn’t a far cry from them either.” Robyn McLean / www.stuff.co.nz

“For almost two hours of stop-start, awkwardly funny, chaotic entertainment, FOTC ensured there was never really a dull moment.” Michelle Robinson / www.aucklandnow.co.nz

“….a performance that lived up to every expectation.” Russell Baillie / NZ Herald

“Catch this unmissable tour if you can, but don’t let your enthusiasm get the better of you. Those goldfish are terribly difficult to remove.”   Guy Somerset / the Listener

“I thought the show was bloody brilliant! Loved the new songs and of course all the ones we know and love ….an absolutely wonderful night, definitely was worth postponing my wedding for!”  Tiffany Elouise McKee / A fan from Mt Albert, Auckland

This is now (unofficially) the most successfully attended tour by any New Zealand born folk duo this decade and will see Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement back performing with their American buddy Arj Barker as support.

“What are you waiting for?  An extra show in your living room?” says Arj.  “Don’t be a dick! Get your ticket today.”

If you live outside of Auckland and missed seeing Flight of the Conchords live in your home town, now’s your chance to book a fantastic weekend away –

Carly Rae Jepsen is heading our way

CarlyRaeJepsen

Whether it was on the radio, music television or YouTube, you’ve probably heard ‘Call Me Maybe’ by Canadian singer/songwriter Carley Rae Jepsen.

The irresistibly catchy song has been sitting at #1 on iTunes for 4 weeks, and has been certified platinum in New Zealand.  The track is dominating our radio airwaves and it’s had OVER 27 MILLION VIEWS on YouTube.

If that’s not enough, it also has celebs making home-made music videos!  If you don’t believe us, you can see for yourselves here – from Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez right through to James Franco and most recently pop princess Katy Perry.

So what’s her story?

Having impressed Justin Bieber, a man with some serious musical clout, who first heard the song on Canadian radio while holidaying in his home country, Jepsen found herself on a rollercoaster ride of success thanks to the backing of Bieber and his team.

Paying it forward…

Says Justin Bieber, “I feel as an artist I have a responsibility to pay it forward. When I was home in Canada I heard Carly and I became a fan and felt like I could help her the way Usher helped me. The good news is that she is a superstar”.

To celebrate her success in New Zealand, Carly Rae Jepsen will be in Auckland for a whirlwind visit, arriving on May 5.  We’ll keep you posted of any in-store appearances she might do over the weekend.

In the meantime, you can watch her official video (again), check out her website, find her on Facebook, or follow her on Twitter.
