been | World Press Photo Exhibition 2018

The World Press Photo Exhibition is currently showing in Auckland’s CBD, and travelling curator Yi Wen Hsia has accompanied this very special collection of photography. The exhibit has a running theme encapsulating current political, social and socio-economic commentary, and is quite fearless in it’s mission. Simultaneously it feels like a very intimate collection, and all the works communicate together in unity and harmony, intensifying the effect.
A large portion of the work on display touches on some very real, confronting subject matter. Simultaneously, you’ll find yourself walking through the exhibit in awe, much of it captivating and beautiful in it’s simplicity.
I’d highly recommend taking up the opportunity to see this exhibition in person while it’s still here in Auckland – it’s a worthwhile event, which will likely leave the viewer a changed person.

been | Britomart Fashion Sessions 2015

At the start of every Autumn is the Britomart Fashion Sessions hosted at Britomart’s Atrium on Takutai. Recently city goers got to see Britomart’s atrium transform into a runway aimed at showcasing Autumn & Winter collections from over five designers with six separate shows in over two days.

On day 1 we saw Trelise Cooper kick off Britomart Fashion Sessions with a generously lengthy show featuring labels Coop, Boardroom, Cooper and Trelise Cooper.

Later that evening Kathryn Wilson celebrated an alluring range of winter shoes on models dressed in 1950’s fashion. Her collection featured polka dots and pink floral patterns among soft blue, tan, black, white and a lot of gold detailing.

Zambesi ended the day showcasing their XXXV range with fantastic oomph and style. Just like NZFW2014 their models strutted down the runway in time with Queen‘s Flash Gordan soundtrack.

Day 2 began with Mindfood, confused? I was to begin with till I learned that Mindfood now has a new magazine titled Mindfood Style. This show presented around 39 different looks created by Mindfood’s stylists selecting and combining pieces found in stores located in and around Britomart.

Later that afternoon Taylor Boutique presented a stunning show full of simplicity and elegance. Once again Taylor kept the colour palette clean focusing only on black, white and tan adding emphasis in the details of texture, pattern, lines, shapes, layers and cuts.

To conclude Britomart’s very fashionable weekend was WORLD, and fortunately I was stuck backstage to experience the mayhem of it all. I felt like I  watched a riddle unfold, a riddle where Carmen Sandiego and Jessica Rabbit decided to rock and roll in an M.C Escher painting. There were geometric prints, sexy fedoras hats, quirky bow-ties and cute bunny ears. The make-up was stunning! The light bulbs were interesting and the atmosphere was totally awesome!

There are plenty more photos available to view, for more images make sure you check out our Britomart Fashion Session Facebook photo albums.

seen | WORLD at Wellington Fashion Week – DAY ONE

Today saw the beginning of Wellington Fashion Week for 2013, it’s second year in operation. And what better way to begin the five days of festivities than beginning with the fashionably well-renown WORLD Showcase.

WORLD is known as one of New Zealand’s foremost avant garde fashion design house and is also an iconic and well-known retailer in Wellington. WORLD has showcased it’s couture at Fashion Weeks in Paris, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and now what I like to think as the Fashion Capital of New Zealand, Wellington.

The models rocked the Great Gatsby-style hair which was incredibly pleasing to the eye with lips shimmering with glitter to compliment and add a more fashionably artistic touch to the overall look. It was a classy twist which was perfected by WORLD’S aesthetic intention as well as the make-up and hair artists.

WORLD’S Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection Showcase was somewhat of an easy guess for me in terms of knowing that we would not be left sitting there twiddling our thumbs. One thing for sure is that whatever they were going to showcase would be absolutely fabulous in design and eye pleasing in colour! It was exactly that plus more. As models walked the runway, you witnessed modern design of a big, bold and beautiful nature at it’s finest. The colour mustard which is my absolute fav, was well utilised within most of the clothing garments. Obviously though, cause it’s an Autumn colour! The standard Greys, Blacks and Browns were often complimented with a touch of orange or pink – that of which proved to be an artistic flair!

Overall, without doubt, WORLD opened Wellington Fashion Week with the kind of ground-breaking show that the brand has become known for across the fashion speaking WORLD. A fashionably amazing show leaving us all with no excuse as to why we all shouldn’t flock to WORLD store tomorrow and purchase clothes at left, right and center of the store… I mean, come on! We totally have to!

Kieran over and out on Day One of Wellington Fashion Week 2013. Check out a few photo’s below – the official set will be posted on Wellington Fashion Week 2013 Facebook page soon. seen | Zambesi, Kate Sylvester & WORLD

This past weekend was truly amazing, I had seen catwalks after catwalks, spoken to many lovely people, enjoyed the atmosphere of high class, style and great amounts of sophistication.

Friday had brought three great fashion shows from three great designers, Trelise Cooper, Katheryn Wilson and Juliette Hogan which had me ‘oooh-ing’ and ‘aah-ing’. So I expected Saturday to be the same, unfortunately I had missed out on some great shows during the day, but had made it in time for the big Saturday finale, the Zambesi, Kate Sylvester and WORLD show.

It was interesting to attend a pre-party as I never even heard of the idea before, but it existed, and it was for VIP and ticket holders. And what great luck, I had a ticket. I enjoyed Valet parking (bless the poor soul that had to drive my banged up car), free drinks, fine food, goodie bags and front row seats to the show!

Zambesi brought around smokey-yellow checkers and soft floral prints combining it with their known dark minimal tailoring. Kate Sylvester had a bit of fun with fur, fox ears with splashes of colours and patterns from the Orient. While WORLD once again demonstrated their bold skill and creativity by delivering more vibrant colours and strong patterns in one collection.

The show was just amazing, the soundtracks were awesome, and I couldn’t stop dancing in my seat. My favourite pieces will have to be two of Kate Sylvester’s red dresses, the bright red knee length dress that pleats and folds at the waist and the long sleeveless dress with oriental/floral stitching.

heard | Experience Newmarket this weekend!

If you’ve been in or around Newmarket (Auckland) recently you’ll know that the Newmarket Festival is on this weekend, and kicks off on Friday.  The festival weekend will be an impressive showcase of Art, Culture, Fashion and Food.

There are 50 events to choose from so be sure to make a day (or a weekend) of it.

Here are some our top picks:

TOMS STYLE YOUR SOLE

Head down to Sitka and get involved with ‘TOMS Style Your Sole’!  Friday night will see the weekend launched with an in store party, live art and a meet and greet with some of the weekend’s ‘Sole’ artists.  You can style your very own pair of TOMS shoes on Saturday and Sunday.

ART, FASHION & CHAMPAGNE

6 contemporary artists collaborate with 6 of the hottest fashion stores on Osborne and Teed Street, to create a ‘Champagne Art Trail’.  Starting at Andrew Moore and finishing at Tigerlilly, you’ll be exposed to some of our best artists including Dick Frizzel, Gretchen Albrecht, and Anna Hanson.

TEA, SCONES, DIVAS

Get an exclusive table in the sun and watch some of the Opera Factory’s very best with ‘High Tea and Opera’ with Teed Street Larder.  Who said afternoon tea was all-soggy scones and stale sandwiches?

SKETCHES OF SPAIN

Be enchanged by the flavours of Spain at Tasca Café on Nuffield Street.  Drink in the evocative sounds of a live Flaminco Guitarist whilst you indulge in traditional Montado Tapas.  The Spanish sounds and flavours continue on the street with Flamenco dancers and Spanish Paella.  Ariba!

SECRET ART TOUR

Take an artistic journey around the Newmarket you never knew.  Your own tour guide will talk you through the background of the four public sculptures, then accompany you to see more works at Fox/Jensen, Tim Melville, Seed Gallery and Railway studios.  Bookings are essential for this one.
