NZICF 19 | 5 mins with Jimmy McGhie

The English poster boy for white male privilege is back again with a brand-new show full of the usual complaints and foolish hopes.

Jimmy McGhie has been doing stand-up for well over a decade, kick-starting his career after reaching the finals of the prestigious ‘BBC New Talent’ competition and at a Showcase at the Edinburgh Festival back in 2005. Since then, he’s worked full time as a stand-up comedian performing on television, radio and across the UK and international comedy circuit. We caught up with Jimmy ahead of his fourth run at the NZ International Comedy Festival.

Describe your show in three words or less…
Hilarious.

What’s the inspiration behind it?
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. (google it)

Where will we find you at the festival?
Hopefully shitfaced on Waiheke island or recovering at Fed Deli.

NZ Comedy Scene – would you swipe right or swipe left?
I don’t swipe. The NZ comedy scene however is awesome. Everyone is incredibly friendly and encouraging and that cannot be said for some other places!

Do you have any top picks for this year’s festival?
The Big Show will be awesome and also Paul Sinha, hands down one of the best stand ups in the UK.

What song or movie best describes the story of your life?
‘Hotel California’…or in my case ‘Travelodge Nottingham’.

What are you currently binge-watching on Netflix?
I have just rewatched Mad Men. Third time through. I really don’t think there will be anything better.

And your top 3 songs on Spotify?
I do not use Spotify. I buy albums. Currently I am obsessed with Richard Swift and am enjoying something of a Beck renaissance.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
Probably lie on a bed, in the dark for 6-8 hours feeling really weird.
