SFS | MC Tali

New Zealand’s Queen of Drum and Bass, Tali is an accomplished MC, freestyler, songwriter, producer, teacher, mentor, motivational speaker, and author – is there anything this woman can’t do?! Hailing from a dairy farm in Taranaki, Tali took on the world in 2001, moving to the UK and becoming a top international MC. She’s worked with some of the biggest names in DNB, including Roni Size, Goldie, Fabio & Grooverider; toured the world over with her band; and has even composed a musical which has previewed at London’s West End. Most recently, Tali has been busy writing a book, titled The Little White House.

Catch Tali performing alongside best friend Aroha at Splore. The powerhouse duo is a force of talent unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

Describe your perfect summer music festival in three words
Full Of Adventure

Name the top three artists who would make up your ideal festival line-up
Anderson Paak, Solange, Dub Physix

What are you looking forward to most about playing the summer festival circuit?
It’s always a bit of a reunion – a chance to catch up with all your fellow musician friends and see them perform and have some backstage fun. I also love the road trip element – cruising around various parts of NZ and playing shows to epic crowds, always gives me such a reinvigorated appreciation for my beautiful country and its people.

In your opinion, what’s this year’s Summer Anthem?
The same tune every summer. ‘Summertime’ by The Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff is my absolute go to. I also think Souls of Mischief ’93 to infinity’ is another summer classic.

Out of all your tunes, which one is the one that ‘never fails’?
Aroha has this tune that sounds like ‘Drop It Like Its Hot’ but like a House remix. I always spit this rhyme originally from De La Soul’s ‘Ring Ring Ring’ over the top of it – which fits perfectly. People go nuts for it because they recognise the sample and I know some people recognise the lyrics. Either way it’s always a vibe.

What’s are the top 3 tracks on your Spotify playlist?

  1. ‘El Tornejant’ – Upercent. This ridiculously heavy minimal Techno jam that I am obsessed with. Jeremy Upbeats put me onto it.
  2. ‘Bun Ya’ – MC DRS, Marcus Intalex, Chimpo, Strategy, Skittles, Fox and Rolla. (The Enei Remix) This is a DnB jam that I cannot listen to except at high volume. I nearly break my neck brockin’ out to this!
  3. ‘OPP’ – Naughty By Nature – This is a classic jam that I love playing in my car. Always gets me a super happy hyper mood.

What’s your personal ‘guilty pleasure’ track
I don’t feel guilty about anything I listen to because it’s all fire. Even the Drake and Bieber shit. lol

What’s your social media of choice?
Instagram. Less rants, more pictures 🙂

Who do you follow and where?
Usually my friends to the dance floor!

What’s your go-to festival outfit?
I love Splore because unlike other festivals you can always be a bit extra. Last year I dressed as a Little Red Fox with light up ears which I made completely by hand. This years costume is already under way. I gotta sewing machine from my Mum in preparation this year! My friends and I all agree – anything with sequins or lights is essential. Helps you find each other in the crowd 🙂

Word association:
Music – Life
Festival – Adventures
Camping – Glamping (our own way)
Fashion – Individual
Roadie – Essential

Situated in a beguiling bay on the shores of Tapapakanga Regional Park, Splore is an annual, boutique and arts festival like no other. Described as New Zealand’s greatest dress up party, this three day entertainment extravaganza promises a good time, good vibes, and hot showers! Splore 2018 takes place 23-25 February. Bringing the festival closer to home, Rhythm and Vines has just announced that they are bringing Glastonbury’s famed Arcadia Afterburner stage to their 2014 festival.

The unique stage will house a 4000 strong dance floor, with a DJ booth at the core of the structure, a towering spire that fires 30 foot flames into the air and flaming tree sculptures.

The announcement will no doubt please Glastonbury fans in New Zealand and give them a little taste of the UK’s most iconic music festival.

heard | Bastille to headline NYE Festivals

Last week it was announced that London-based Bastille will headline both Rhythm and Vines and Rhythm and Alps festivals, the first headliners for the 2014 year!

Lead singer of BASTILLE, Dan Smith says “We are massively excited about heading to New Zealand for the first time in our lives and that we get to come to do such fun festivals. We’re really happy to be one of the headliners.  We’re really excited.”

Bastille have had a meteoric rise to fame since their March 2013 debut album Bad Blood entered the number one spot in the UK charts and achieved platinum status.   It started in 2011 when they pressed only 300 copies of their debut single ‘Flaws and shortly afterwards the accompanying video scored half a million hits on You Tube.  They were quickly signed by Virgin Records, and after only three singles they were selling-out their first headline UK tour before their album was even released.

Their anthemic fourth single ‘Pompeii’ charted at number two in the UK charts and went on to become the second most streamed track of 2013, just behind Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’, and so far holds the record as the song to spend the most number of weeks at number one on the Official Streaming Chart. Their triumphant 2013 ended with another number two UK hit single, ‘Of The Night.’

Their phenomenal success has continued into 2014 and has seen them nominated for four BRIT Awards (British Breakthrough Act, British Group, British Album, Best Single for ‘Pompeii’).  The band have recently been touring America and playing festivals such as Coachella and The Governors Ball in New York before touring Australia.

Their appearances at Rhythm and Vines and Rhythm and Alps will be their first ever NZ shows.

BASTILLE New Zealand dates:

Rhythm and Alps – 30th December 2014
Tickets available from the 23rd June. Pre-register for the Presale from www.minttix.com

Rhythm and Vines – 31st December 2014

heard | 24 days of (winning) La De Da tickets

It’s December and for the kid in all of us, that means it’s finally time to crack open your Christmas Advent Calendar… the folk at La De Da have decided to put their own twist on those calendars by creating their own version just for you, the good people of Aotearoa.

There are some rather noticeable differences between the cardboard and chocolate version and the La De Da Advent Calendar. For example they’re using Instagram instead of cardboard and they’re giving away a 2 day pass with camping instead of a chocolate. That’s right folks, each day up until Christmas day, starting yesterday (1st of December), you’ll have the chance to win a 2 day pass with camping included to La De Da NYE 2013. If you happen to have already purchased a ticket but you’d like to enter the competition anyway, you have the chance to win a free VIP upgrade on your existing ticket.

It’s really simple to enter. From December 1st you just need to snap a pic that best represents Christmas for you. It can be funny, serious, it can include you or not. The creative side of it is completely up to you. Once you’ve taken the picture Instagram it tagging in @ladedanye and hash tagging #ladedanye13. The person with the most likes each day (calculated at 9am every following morning) will be contacted by La De Da to let you know you’ve won. The La De Da Facebook page will post each winning pic right up until Christmas Day.

So there it is. Snap and post your way to a New Years Eve experience with A$AP Rocky, Flume, Kora, Ladi 6, Katchafire and a WHOLE lot more.

Please note this competition is ONLY open to those 18 and over. La De Da NYE 2013 is a licensed event and tickets will not be presented to anyone under the age of 18.

Good luck!
