NZFW 2017 | 5 mins with Tymone Betts

What do you get when you mix leather, brass and chrome?  The perfect combination of form and function, and the stylish new collection from Empire of Genius.  Aptly titled, Chain Gang, this collection is all about interchangeable bags that fit into the lifestyle needs of the wearer.

We talk to the genius behind the empire, Tymone Winter Betts.  Inspired by a number of things, but mainly rock’n’roll, laughter and the wild and wonderful cultures she encounters on her travels; Tymone’s pieces are a work of art, just like the women who wear them.

Empire of Genius’ Chain Gang will be presented at The NZFW Accessories Showcase this Thursday.

What inspired your collection?

I was over rummaging through my oversized bag and wanted something more functional for running around in… I can move quite fast. Lol. My favourite piece is the inception set. I’m loving having all my essentials right there, when and where I need them. It’s kind of like an oversized necklace.

Name 3 NZ designers we should watch out for….

There are so many clever designers in NZ. It’s great that their are lots of different boutique designers in NZ focusing on quality products, slow fashion and smaller boutique runs which are made to last. And we need all of them! Trying to keep manufacturing in NZ is hard. But I make everything here because I love making and being involved in the whole process of creating the garments and bags.

Describe your quintessential customer…

Stylish, organised ,busy, fun- these pieces are perfect for the busy travellers, fashionistas and people who need to stay organised on the move.

NZFW 2017 | 5 mins with Sara Munro

Since its inception 9 years ago, Company of Strangers has acquired a cult following for its proudly 100% New Zealand made range of high-quality garments, leather and jewellery.  Their mission is to create, re-create and collaborate.   Founder, Sara Munro honed her skills at NOM*d; starting her fashion career hand stitching rosettes made from mens’ vintage ties before moving onto becoming a sample maker.  CoS garments have a reputation for being meticulous yet experimental, reflecting a modern simplicity while combining luxury fabrics with contemporary functionality.  This is one label we’re excited to see taking over the runway at NZ Fashion Week.

What inspired your collection?

Our collection began with a story we dreamed up about a woman who haunts her husband from the other side, she messes with him constantly so he can never forget her. It’s subtle, it’s as if she is leaving an impression on his clothing, attaching a piece of her scarf to his coat like a belt, she cuts up his business shirts and turns them into dresses.  Slices through his tailored jackets, ghostly ink prints appear on the garments of hers she left behind.  The palette is dark and moody yet there is a feminine vintage softness of apricots spiked with an acidic twist.

NZFW 2017 | 5 mins with Hannah Burnard

Known for their 5-piece, seasonal capsule collections; Issue Clothing Co. designs versatile, work-appropriate clothing.  Boasting silhouettes that are designed to skim, not cling; leaving you to look and feel great all day long.  Hannah & Robyn strongly believe that a few well-chosen pieces can actually give you more options than a vast array of ‘fast fashion’ – they favour quality over quantity and are proud to be producing high quality clothing that’s made to last and it’s all manufactured right here in New Zealand.  We spoke to Hannah ahead of their NZ Fashion Week preview.

What inspired your collection?
We had a shared vision for a better workwear shopping experience; think clean lines, flattering silhouettes, and versatile clothing that effortlessly pairs with other items you already own. We’re inspired by the ‘boss lady’ women out there, and have created a collection that will dress them for all occasions, from brunch, to the boardroom, and everything in between.

Describe your quintessential customer…
She is a working professional, she’s busy, and knows what she likes. She shops a few times a year, and is loyal to brands she trusts. She expects service, and high quality clothing, and due to her business savvy nature isn’t include to impulse purchase. She’s a practical shopper, and knows the styles, fabrics and ‘things’ that suit her, but still wants to be seen to be on trend, and stylish.

What’s your social media of choice?
We love instagram, it’s a great platform both for showcasing designs and finding inspiration.

Who do you love to follow and where?
We are all over the map with this stuff. It’s not just about fashion, it’s about strong female role models, food trends, work/life and health — all things entertaining and inspiring. We follow the entrepreneur guys like Tim Ferris and Gary Vee as well as influencers like Twocorporategirls, anna.mac, littlemiss_corporate, NZ classics like Nadia Lim and Rachel Hunter
